Generally speaking, every service in Buddhism is a service to reciprocate Buddha's wisdom and compassion with respect and gratitute. The service is also an opportunity to listen to wisdom and compassion that brings us to the world that goes beyond our smiles and tears, including death.
Hoonko (Hoh-On-Koh) is one of them for Pure-Land followers to express respect and gratitude for Shinran Shonin (1173-1262) who realized, experienced, and clarified the existence of Buddha's Immeasurable Working in the simple recitation of Amida Buddha's name, or Namo-Amida-Butsu.
Recitation of Namo-Amida-Butsu is so-called the Great Practice which is equally possible for anybody to practice at any time and any place. Although it does not sound serious or important, try to find anything close to the recitation or Namo-Amida-Butsu. We never ever find anything like this in everyday life: Practice is equally given to anybody at any time and any place. Probably, truth for anybody beyond time and space exists in something easy and simple.
I recognize the profound Wisdom and the warm Compassion in the simple and easy recitation. Namo-Anida-Butsu is the only path left for anybody to go beyond impermanence, including death. This is what Shinran clarified through his 90-year life.

I'd like to thank you for your visible (and invisible) support in the past year. You made it possible for me and our Sangha to cover many events and programs in 2009. I have too many names to thank, however, I appreciate your ever lasting concerns and support through out the entire year.
This coming year, we will continue
